With just a few days left before the summer transfer window closes, the most intriguing transfer saga has taken yet another twist. Newcastle’s wantaway superstar Alexander Isak has dropped a bombshell on his Instagram story.
The brilliant forward’s fine performances last season earned him a deserved spot in the PFA Team of the Year. His absence from the awards ceremony, however, raised eyebrows and fuelled speculation about what was really happening behind the scenes.
Isak, who joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad in the summer of 2022 on a six-year deal worth around £63 million, is contracted to the club until June 2028. Yet rumours have long swirled about his desire to move on. Liverpool are believed to be his preferred destination, despite reported interest from elsewhere, including Al Hilal. According to Fabrizio Romano, Isak has only ever wanted Liverpool.
Yesterday, Isak’s Instagram story revealed his frustrations. He claimed that broken promises from Newcastle had led to a complete breakdown in trust. His stellar 2024–25 season, where he scored 27 goals across competitions, should have been a cause for celebration, but instead has ended in controversy.
Reports suggest that previous assurances made to him by the club’s leadership were never formally documented. When the new sporting structure took over, those promises were dismissed.

Despite keeping his head down and continuing to deliver for Newcastle, Isak was left disillusioned — especially after team-mate Anthony Gordon was rewarded with a new contract just a year after joining. In his post, Isak spoke of “betrayal” and made it clear that the relationship with Newcastle has “lost trust and therefore cannot continue.”

Newcastle quickly responded with a firm statement denying any such promises were ever made. The club stressed that they will not be bullied into selling their star man and that this public stance from Isak has not helped his case. They remain resolute in their aim to keep hold of their striker, with the focus now on the season ahead — including an exciting Champions League campaign.
Liverpool, meanwhile, wait patiently in the background. Their opening £110 million bid was rejected, but they are reportedly preparing an improved offer. With several high-profile departures this summer — Darwin Núñez to Al Hilal, Luis Díaz to Bayern Munich, and Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid — Jürgen Klopp is determined to bring in elite attacking quality.
Despite already adding Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, Liverpool see Isak as the missing piece to mount another serious Premier League title challenge. Newcastle’s Saudi-backed owners, however, remain determined not to lose their gem unless their terms are met.
